Good Wine, Bad Wine and The Ugly
Contemporary Christian Music Dangers From a Biblical Perspective
by
James J Frizzell
What does the Bible really say about wine, worship, music, and separation from the world? In this book, James J. Frizzell examines two issues he believes many modern churches have failed to address with proper seriousness: alcohol and contemporary Christian music (CCM). Writing from a dispensational perspective informed by the King James Bible, he argues that Christians need to be guided by something more than cultural opinion, personal preference, or church tradition when deciding what belongs in their lives and worship. They need the authority of Scripture. This book explores the biblical distinction between good wine and bad wine, the danger of intoxicating drinks, and the spiritual consequences of compromise. Frizzell also turns his attention to contemporary Christian music, asking whether modern worship has become too influenced by entertainment, emotionalism, celebrity culture, commercial interests, and secular musical forms. At its heart, this is a book about discernment. Frizzell challenges believers to examine what they drink, sing, tolerate, and call worship in light of God’s word. He warns against a church culture that seeks popularity at the expense of doctrine and urges Christians to return to reverence, separation, and soul winning. Emotionalism is not true spirituality. Direct, urgent, and unapologetic, this book is a call for Christians to test all things by Scripture and recover a form of life and worship that sets them apart from the world.
James J. Frizzell earned a master’s degree in biblical studies from FaithWay Baptist College in 1996, but the doctrines he learned about while writing this book were never taught there. Despite facing opposition from pastors and other church leaders regarding his views, James’s focus has remained remarkably consistent ever since. Not only was his thesis paper titled “Apostasy in the Church,” for a time he was the editor of the Military Christian Fellowship’s monthly newsletter, during which he wrote about alcohol consumption from a biblical perspective. These days he works as a dentist in Niagara Falls, Ontario, where he lives with his wife and their dog. His previous publishing credits include Domestic Violence Human Trafficking From a Canadian Perspective (2025).
