The Battle that Lost its Name
by
Gerhard Bihl
Set against the tumultuous backdrop of the Roman Empire, Gerhard Bihl’s The Battle That Lost Its Name transports readers back to a time of war, power politics, and conspiracies, experienced through the lives of young patricians Cornelia and Julius. When their childhood friendship blossoms into a passionate love, they must struggle against the traditions of their society and the selfish ambitions of their fathers to try to build a life together. Thwarted at every turn, the young lovers find themselves separated by family circumstances and the call of battle. Julius fights in the Pannonian War, serving as an intelligence officer and translator. He witnesses the infamous “Battle That Lost Its Name” and discovers a government conspiracy—but will he be able to avenge his comrades’ deaths and shine the light of truth on the corruption behind the defeat? Replete with action, intrigue, and historical detail, The Battle That Lost Its Name is a powerful tale of love, courage, and the enduring power of forgiveness—proving the strength of the human will in the face of life’s darkest moments.
Gerhard Bihl was born in Germany and is a survivor of World War II. As a young man, he was fascinated by the Roman Empire, an interest that developed while he was exploring the Teutoburg Forest in search of his father, a soldier reported missing in action. He eventually immigrated to Canada, where he became a geologist and continued to pursue archaeology and the study of Roman history, focusing particularly on the lives of children and young adults in that era. After completing two master’s degrees, a doctorate, and a PhD, he decided to draw on his research and craft a novel that would be accessible to a wide audience. Now eighty-seven, Gerhard enjoys swimming, chair yoga, and walking in nature with his wife, Jan. Together they volunteer at the Rivendell Retreat Centre, engaging with people on spiritual journeys. He’s also interested in drawing, music, and exploring documentaries on cultures, landscapes, and wildlife around the world, as he continues to fuel his curiosity and creativity.
