The Secret of Broken Dishes
by Debra Nelson-Hogan

It’s 1998 in New York City and forty something Emily McKenzie is ready for a challenge. New to sobriety and relationships, she has built a solo life for herself that feels safe, insulated from her tumultuous childhood. The risks she takes come in the form of improv performances, not romantic entanglements. That is, until she meets Jack, a Los Angeles-based TV actor starring in an off-Broadway play. At first, the relationship seems casual and fun, a summer fling with a fixed end-date. But when summer ends, they are not ready to part. In The Secret of Broken Dishes, Emily and Jack discover an improv approach to life and love, saying “yes, and” to experiences and sometimes to each other. But life is more complicated than a four-minute skit. Can they create the relationship that works for them?

Debra Nelson-Hogan has always been driven by curiosity and trusting her intuition. She had a successful forty-year career writing, educating, and editing in a variety of industries that included international shipping, apparel manufacturing, and medical education.  She spent the final twenty years in pain management, first  as Communications Director for the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome of America and later Director of Education for the American Academy of Integrative Pain Management, giving her a clear understanding of the challenges both patients and health care providers face, particularly around the use of opioid analgesics.   She still loves travel, a hobby that was cemented during a junior year abroad in Barcelona.  Although Debra tends to prefer the warm Mediterranean countries, her Irish husband, Tom, has shown her the beauty and joy of his homeland. They met in New York City in an improvisational dance class in 1997 and immediately incorporated “yes, and” into their love language. They moved to rural South Carolina after retiring in 2019 and now spend winters in their home nestled among cacao trees on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. During Covid Summer of 2020, Debra finally said “yes and” to Fiction.
