A Compassionate Path to Healing from Sexual Trauma
A Guide for Indigenous Youth
by
Corrine L McArthur
Healing from sexual assault or child sexual abuse can feel overwhelming and lonely, especially for Indigenous youth living in communities where support and resources may be difficult to access. In this guide, counsellor and survivor Corrine McArthur offers practical tools, encouragement, and understanding for young people navigating the impacts of trauma. Corrine McArthur uses clear, supportive language, helping young readers better understand topics such as consent, grooming, trauma responses, triggers, flashbacks, and disclosure. Along the way, readers are introduced to grounding exercises, coping strategies, reflective prompts, and safety planning tools designed to support healing at a pace that feels safe and manageable for them. Corrine also draws on Indigenous teachings and encourages connection with trusted supports, community, culture, and Elders, reminding readers that they are not alone and that the abuse was never their fault. Above all, this guide offers hope: healing is possible, and no survivor has to walk the journey alone.
Corrine McArthur is a counsellor, advocate, and writer from Kahkewistahaw First Nation in Treaty 4 Territory, Saskatchewan. With more than sixteen years of experience researching and supporting individuals impacted by sexual assault and child sexual abuse, Corrine is deeply committed to creating culturally relevant healing resources for Indigenous communities. Corrine holds a Master of Social Work degree and has completed extensive trauma-focused training to support survivors in their healing journeys. Her work brings together professional counselling approaches, Indigenous Teachings, and lived experience to create spaces where young people feel seen, supported, and understood. She is also the author of Decolonizing the Healing Process from Sexual Trauma and is a member of the Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers. When she is not working or writing, Corrine enjoys spending time with her spouse and their two daughters, two grandsons, and two dogs.
