This Friendship Requires Dogs
Stories of Women and Their Dogs and Connections Made
by Daenna Van Mulligen

“So much of what has connected me to people is my dog.” Women with difficult dogs are a special breed—and in a world rife with judgment, they have to stick together. In This Friendship Requires Dogs, Daenna Van Mulligen pays tribute to the many women she’s befriended through her dog, Jace, an anxious Xoloitzcuintli who has won many hearts on Instagram. While all the friendships profiled began online, the women in these pages live near and far from Daenna, some walking their dogs with her on a regular basis, others finding kinship over texts and video calls. What draws most of them together is their willingness to offer a home to the troubled dogs many would write off as too challenging, learning life-changing lessons along the way. Others in the book share Daenna’s love of the rare Xoloitzcuintli breed. Read their stories and open your heart to the special sisterhood that arises from canine companionship.

Daenna Van Mulligen is a lifelong dog lover who adopted her first Xoloitzcuintli in 2017. That experience led her to write Jace’s Journey, which highlights the traumas and triumphs of training a dog with behavioural issues. Through Jace, Daenna learned about care and training from professionals and the “Xolo” community, a group she is always growing with her Instagram account, @showmethexolo. Daenna lives on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, with her husband Barry and Xolo dogs Jace, Xoco, and Lulu.
